EU Adopts Revised Waste Framework Directive, Reshaping Global Textile Supply Chains

次数:

On September 9, 2025, the European Parliament formally adopted the revised Waste Framework Directive, requiring textile manufacturers within the EU to assume recycling costs for the entire product lifecycle through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs within 30 months of the directive's entry into force. The new regulation covers all categories including apparel, footwear, and home textiles, with micro-enterprises granted a one-year implementation extension. This policy will accelerate global supply chain transformation: Chinese fabric exporters to the EU must concurrently upgrade recycling technologies, such as adopting chemical recycling processes for waste textiles; EU-based brands must redesign product structures to ensure materials are disassemblable and recyclable. For instance, Hugo Boss's recently launched Nova Poly recycled polyester yarn, enhanced with bio-based additives for improved biodegradability, stands as a benchmark case in complying with the new regulations. The directive also extends oversight to mattresses for the first time and plans to restrict textile waste exports, aiming to reduce textile landfill waste in the EU by 40% by 2030.
